How we score. Every percentage comes from cross-referencing note pyramids against Fragrantica and brand-official sources, then weighting what people who own both fragrances actually report. We don't publish anything below 85%, and we say when something barely clears.

#2Al Haramain Detour Noir
Shares with the original: Jasmine, Vanilla, Sandalwood
A Fragrantica Club member wrote a review of this titled simply ‘An Alternative To Layton’, and it is the most careful account of the comparison anywhere — he lists the pyramid, gives the performance honestly at around five hours with two feet of projection for the first two, and names the gap himself: he gets vanilla and almond up front, where Layton has a semi-tart apple that this does not really have. Another owner is blunter still, saying Detour Noir came close enough that he could comfortably sell his Layton. Read the note list with care, because it is contested. Sellers on eBay and elsewhere publish a pyramid for this fragrance that is Layton's own, apple and lavender and violet included. The reviewer who actually wore it lists almond, jasmine and cypress over amber and heliotrope, with no apple at all — which matches what he smells. We used his. Three shared notes is thin on paper, and that is why this sits at 88 rather than higher, but the people who own both are unusually consistent.

#3The Woods Collection Natural Dusk EDP
Shares with the original: Apple, Bergamot, Lavender, Jasmine, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Guaiac Wood
Verified buyers compare it to Layton directly and one names a real difference rather than a vague resemblance: no menthol note, which Layton has and which a lot of people dislike in it. Another says it smells better than the original, at least for the price gap. It keeps the apple and lavender opening that Detour Noir drops. Two reasons this sits at our floor rather than above it. The comparisons are purchase reviews rather than a documented side-by-side, and no Fragrantica pyramid exists for it, so the notes here come from retailer listings and should be treated as indicative. There is also a documented quality problem worth knowing before you buy: the atomiser on these is widely reported as weak, spraying very little, to the point that sellers mention it unprompted. The juice is well liked; the bottle is not.
